Race Prejudice or Apartheid
White races Consider that they are by nature superior to other races and only they are the. Builders of civilization. The great teachers of mankind had no white skin. -Race prejudice has always existed but it is more dangerous now. Whites in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and South Africa behaved like brutes. Race prejudice will cause a great harm as it has done in the past. In India, despite .the best efforts of Mahatma Gandhi, the racial hatred is rampant., it is fortunate that all over the world people are raising. Their voice against racial prejudice. It can be removed with the collective efforts of .all countries of the world.
The belief that humanity has, by nature, been divided into aces and sub races and that. certain races are inherently superior to others in psychological endowment, forms the basis of the color prejudice hypothesis. Racial superiority has been attributed to a number of causes, but in any event the racial difference hypothesis assumes it as of a Ornament nature, resting upon fundamental native differences. An opposite view insists that apparent differences .in psychological characteristics are not biological but are due to culture and social environment. History reveals that the belief of racial superiority is very old and well night universal: In recent years, it has taken on such tremendous reality and prejudicial significance for many racial groups that they will die in wits defense. Also, outworn and forgotten racial theories have been revised in an attempt to rationalize political,- social and economic actions and policies.
The white races are considered superior as they have reason to honor their ideals. They consider that they are the true builders of civilization and these views have led to the concept of white man’s burden. This concept shamelessly proclaims that white civilization requires, the directions of legal barriers in order to protect itself against Asiatic and Africans. The real white man’s burden is not to insolently dominate colored or black people, it is to desist from the hypocrisy. It is true that white man should learn to treat every human being as their equal.
There is no mystery about whiteness of the skin. It has been proved that, given equal opportunity, a man, be of any color or country, is good as any other.
The greatest of the teachers of Mankind were all Asiatic and they had no white skin. But it is regrettable that the whites in Zimbabwe and., South Africa behaved like brutes and enacted laws to force the Negros, Indians and other Asiatic to live in horrid ghettoes. This is true of the USA also that proclaims to be the most civilized nation in the world where the Bill of Civil Rights is still treated as a scrap of paper in the southern regions. Zimbabwe achieved independence in April, 1980 after a bitter struggle against the white minority government.
Non-violence is the dream of the wise while violence is the history of man—said our eminent philosopher-statesmen. In the twentieth century,, violence has been carried on by the groups of human species which take pride in being white, as if mere color was the hallmark of superiority of a race. It is a great stigma in human Society because the; discrimination between man and man can have no justifiable grounds.
The study of the world history tells us the, various causes of the color prejudice. It may .be recalled that the various European powers “, established their colonies in Africa. The consequence of this policy of colonialism is the evil birth racial discrimination. The Portuguese boast that there is no racial problem in the Portuguese possessions. This is completely wrong. Portuguese colonies are strictly under a police rule. Life of indigenous habitants is completely controlled. The police have a way of reaching down every person Who has to carry a pass. He must be Obedient and must keep out of mischief. If he fails to do so or shows a tendency of rebellion, be is brutally punished and even exiled. In Zimbabwe and South Africa, apartheid was practiced ruthlessly. The economic, control of the big monopoly business concerns, which once ruled Africa, remained practically unchanged. The natives were deprived of the productive lands; they were subjected to forced labor on pitifully low wages on conditions that remind one Of slavery.
Races which are scientifically advanced think that they have a right to dominate, govern and exploit people of the underdeveloped countries. The race prejudice shows that the animal in man still persists. The animals recognize the members of their own herd by scent. or by sight but they react with suspicion at the .approach of a strange animal even if aware one of their own species. Human beings still possess many traits of animal behavior.
Race prejudice will cause unprecedented human suffering as it has caused in the past. It was due to, race prejudice that the mass extermination of the Jews took place at the hands of the Nazis under Hitler. The Germans thought that they Were a superior race. When the Jews established their own State of Israel, the prejudice against them as still prevalent, now from the Arabs. This racial prejudice between the Arabs and Israel resulted in three wars first in 1948 when the Arabs attacked Israel, but were defeated, second in 1956 when Israel attacked Egypt and third in the West Asian crisis of June 1967.
A large section of the population called Negroes are treated as sub-human beings, their children are refused admission in the so called, white schools, colleges, public places, restaurants and parks. All the democratic institutions seem to be monstrous fictions. When the Negroes peek their human rights, they receive bullets from the so called superior race policemen. It was in America, the most developed and so called highly civilized country that the great leader Martin Luther King was, assassinated That was the greatest blot on modern civilization. There .is no spirit of cooperation and accommodation even in that highly developed country. In South Africa the worst type of race prejudice was prevalent. The leading countries of the World resorted to economic boycott of that country so that she Might realise her blunders. The problem engaged the attention of the Commonwealth countries very closely. New Guinea, Mozambique, and many other pockets of the superior powers are smearing under the lash of the race prejudice. Even in England there have been many cases of racial violence.
Even in India, which has been the motherland of the exponents of racial harmony as Lord Buddha, Saint Ravidas and Mahatma Gandhi, the racial prejudices are rampant. Gandhiji was assassinated by a communal fanatic”. Gandhiji fought all his life for the uplift of the depressed classes and scheduled caste people. He called them the people of God—Harjans. But even today the orthodox society has not been able to accommodate these Harijans. They are still meted out inhuman treatment and kept away from the so called upper class of society.
It is heartening to note that by and large all over the world, people are raising their Voice in protest against race prejudice. All the member countries of UNO have condemned the racial policies. Various types of sanctions have been proposed against it. In, U.S.A. the enlightened section of people has strongly condemned the racial prejudices of sow of the States in their own country,. It was .for the first brae in ,New York On December 15, 1989, since India Voiced against apartheid in South Africa, that U.N. General Assembly agreed to take steps to dismantle the Pretoria regime founded on racial segregation.
In a historic vote the Parliament of South Africa voted on June 17; 199.1 to scrap apartheid as a state law. The South African president has pledged to remove all barriers in the society based on the color of the skin. Subsequent to this historic decision the President appealed to the United Nations and to the United States to lift sanctions against South Africa.
The seventh Non-Aligned Summit made a remarkable achievement. Ail eight-member committee headed by India was formed to strengthen the struggle of Palestinian people for their homeland. The conference called fox independence of Namibia. The eighth Non-Aligned Summit moved a step forward. The Summit aroused world-wide attention, especially because it was held in the capital (Harare) of a “frontline” Africa State (Zimbabwe), close to the borders of white racist South Africa, During the Summit a nine-member “AFRICA” (Action for Resisting Invasion, Colonialism and Apartheid) fund was established. The objective of the fund was to aid the front line States and the freedom movement in South Africa. Other -major ,functions of this fund were to maintain supplies, plan relief measures and ensure smooth transportation in wake .of the threats of the Pretoria regime to disrupt them.. It will be possible to root out the race prejudice only with the collective efforts and the mutual cooperation of all the countries of the world.
The natives of Namibia had also been fighting the racist regime of the whites and the struggle for their freedom had been going on. Most European and Western countries were doing brisk business in Namibia and exploiting its natural wealth in blatant violation of UN imposed sanctions. The UN General Assembly, in 1973, called the South West. African Peoples Organization (SWAPO) as the true representatives of the people of Namibia. Three years later the world body conferred on the Namibians the. right to achieve independence.
The NAM .Coordinating Bureau in April 1985 urged the UN Security Council to initiate appropriate action under the UN Charter to ensure; South Africans compliance with their earlier resolutions. In September 1986 the General Assembly adopted a non-aligned resolution demanding immediate implementation of its resolution of 1978 on Namibia’s freedom.
After a long struggle of 74 years, Namibia ultimately got freedom from: South Africans rule on the midnight of -March 20-21 1990. India was, among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Namibia.
Mr. Nelson Mandela ,and his African National Congress also began a struggle against apartheid and tyranny. After remaining in jail for 27 years Mr. Mandela was released on February 11, 1990. His release ushered in a new era. Constitutional talks began in December, 1991 and first general elections in South Africa took place in Aimil, 1994. ANC got 62.25% of votes: Nelson Mandela was sworn in (the first black) President on May 10.
