Italy : The greatest artist of renaissance period

Regarded as the greatest artist of the middle ages, Michelangelo was born in Italy in the year 1475. He wanted to be a sculptor from his childhood. At that time, it was considered necessary to know about painting before one could aspire to be a sculptor. Hence, he first studied painting and made many paintings in Florence. Impressed by his capability, the then Pope invited him to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Church.

Michelangelo made some 350 illustrations in the Sistine Chapel. They cover 1000 square feet. It took him four years of hard work to complete the work. The paintings are still as fresh as they were in his time. . Millions flock to Sistine Chapel to see and admire them even today. Michelangelo sculpted many statues. His statue of David in Florence is considered as a valuable contribution to the world of fine arts. It is carved in marble. His statue of Moses and the door of Portapia were equally famous. His sculptures have carved for him a niche in the world. He played an important role in the development of art during renaissance period. It was because of him that Florence became a world renowned centre for art. His memory has been honoured by countries all over the world. India also issued a postal stamp to honour him. Michelangelo was known for his simple habits and life. He died in 1564.
