France : Inventor of Braille script for the blind

Louis Braille was born in France in the year 1809. His father made leather goods in a village near Paris. While playing, one day Louis hurt his eye with an implement used for stitching leather. After some time, his second eye also was blinded. He was only five when he became totally blind. His father got him admitted to a school for blind. During his school days, a retired soldier taught him to read with the help of embossed dots. Braille felt that the script had some deficiencies. He set out to invent a script for the blind people. This consisted of raised dots so that the blind I people could feel them with their fingers and read. At present, books, magazines and other literatures are available in this script for the blind. Though, he was himself blind, Braille made it easy for the blind to read and gain knowledge. They could then take part in all normal human activities.

Braille died at the young age of 42. His script became popular as time passed. Hundreds of schools came up to make the blind literate by using his script. The world shall always remain indebted to his contribution which opened up new vistas for his fellow blind persons. Braille was also a competent musician and teacher who devoted his life to make the life of blind people somewhat worthwhile.
