Sunita Williams

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Lyn Williams (41) returned to earth from International Space Station after six months (a record 195-day) stay in space on June 23, 2007 at 0119 hrs 1st. She surpassed the 188-, day, 4 hours mark set by US astronaut Shannon Lucid in 1996 on a mission to the Russian Mir space station. The Atlantis-the 118th shuttle mission and 21st mission to visit the space station landed smoothly and safely after completing 09.3 million km journey at the Edwards Air Force Base in California. Though the shuttle Atlantis was to be originally landed at the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral but poor weather forced mission managers to skip three landing attempts. Williams is the only female to have stayed in space uninterrupted for the mission was originally scheduled for mid-March but a hail storm damaged its fuel tank and the delay thus resulted in Williams staying three extra months in the space lab as it was on Dec. 9, 2006 that Williams had undertaken her first space flight. Earlier in the year, she broke the record for most spacewalk time by a woman by logging 29 hours and 17 minutes in four spacewalks to top Kathy Thorton’s 21-hours space walk. Also on April 16, 2007, she became the first astronaut to run a marathon in orbit using a treadmill suspended by gyroscopes to minimise any impact of pounding feet on the space station.

The Atlantis had blasted off on June 8, 2007 into space to bring back Williams and to install new solar power panels aboard the ISS. Now, American astronaut Clayton Anderson has replaced Sunita as the new flight engineer on the station. Sunita started her NASA career in late’90s.

It was in 1998 that Sunita was selected by NASA and she began her training in August 1998. Following a period of training and evaluation, Williams worked in Moscow with the Russian Space Agency and also worked within the Robotics branch on the ISS Robotic Arm and the related Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator. In May 2002 she was a crew member on the NEEMO 2 mission, living underwater for nine days in the Aquarius habitat. After a tiring and difficult six-month long space sojourn, Sunita is now thinking about going to the moon for according to her sky is the limit!
