Anti-Leprosy Day – 30th January

Anti Leprosy Day is celebrated on the 30th of January. It is an awareness day to make people know about leprosy and take precautionary measures for their good health, as we know that “prevention is better than cure.”

Anti Leprosy Day coincides with martyrdom Day of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Like any other disease, leprosy is also caused by a germ and is least infectious. It attacks the skin and the nerves. It causes the skin to swell and become discoloured. This disease has its effect mostly on the face, arms and legs. It does away with the feeling in the skin. This disease is caused by a rod-shaped bacterium which was discovered by C.A. Hansen in 1874. Early treatment of leprosy is essential to prevent the deformity of fingers and toes. Bone and tendon surgery is important as it restores the use of disabled hands and feet.

This disease is preventable by

1-Avoiding infection through the respiratory tract

2-Increasing the level of immunity in human being through good healthy living and sanitation of body and surroundings. The doubt of the infection is thinkable if one notices a pale or red patch on body.

Facts about leprosy are:

  1. It is the least infectious and curable disease.
  2. Leprosy is fully curable with Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT). The treatment has to be carried on for 1 year together. India is determined to achieve leprosy elimination by a formulated National Leprosy Eradication programme (NLEP).

“Let us all pledge in hurry, to make India leprosy free.”
