Co-Education in India

The history of co-education in India has been of a mixed kind. In the northern part of our country, there are a large number of coeducational schools. While in the southern part the numbers of unisex schools are more. This is also true for the rural India, where the rural masses frown upon both the boys and girls studying together.

The aim of co-education basically is to provide a teaching and learning atmosphere for both the boys and girls under one roof.

However many people who do not favor this system of education are of the opinion that this system is not good. They feel that co-education is an urban phenomenon. They give reasons like the boys and girls are different from each other. After growing up they have to perform different functions in life. They feel that since men have to earn for the family and women have to look after the household, their education should not be on similar lines. Secondly, in the co-educational system, there is more wastage of time. Boys try to impress girls and vice-versa. They pay less attention to studies and are more interested in having relationships

On the contrary, people who favor this system believe it to be good because they feel that both girls and boys have to face the same situation when they grow up. They have to struggle to find good jobs. They have to perform the same functions inside and outside their homes. Besides, studying together gives birth to healthy relations. The factor of curiosity and bashfulness disappears. Boys become more polite and gentle in the presence of girls. While girls become bold and confident in the company of boys. Another advantage of a co-educational school is that the expenditure on setting up two sets of schools, one for the boys and the other for the girls, is reduced to half. This saves precious resources for other development purposes.

When one analyses these factors, one comes to a conclusion that the advantages of co-education outweigh their disadvantages. This is so because a rapidly developing country like India needs confident and sensitive citizens, capable of making the country progress faster and not those young men and women who are inhibited in each other’s presence, thus making them unable to function to their full capacity. Such young people will, later on, prove to be harmful to the national interest that requires both men and women to work harmoniously and with understanding in many areas of development.
