Educational Possibilities in India

The education system in India is not up to the mark. She occupies a low position among the countries rated on the education for All Index by UNESCO, although some serious efforts are now being made to improve the education system in India. According to the statistics issued by UNESCO, education is not evolving in India. In the modern world, knowledge is doubling every three years. If we bear this in mind, then India is not likely to be able to meet the target of 100 percent enrolment by 2015.

According to the figures made available by UNESCO, over 500 million people in India have less than five years of schooling. Only 7 to 10 percent of Indians have access to a college education. 300 million people in India .are illiterate. They comprise about one-third of the total number of illiterates in the world. However, now the situation is changing fast. The student enrolment is picking up on a revolutionary scale even in the poor states like U.P., M.P., and Bihar.

It is clear that if India wants to become a member of the emerging “knowledge society”, she must invest heavily in education. With the setting up of the National Knowledge Commission, now India is making some sincere efforts in this direction. The Nobel laureate prof. Amartya Sen has also said that education and health need much more attention in India.

There are two broad systems of education at the school level. There is a basic difference in the system of teaching in public schools and in government schools. However, the system of 10 + 2 + 3 has been introduced all over the country. Like public school education, college education has become very expensive. The people of the poor and lower-middle classes cannot afford it. Education in technical fields such as medicine, engineering, and management is even more expensive. Education is getting out of the reach of the common man.

All those who get an education in colleges and universities hardly get jobs. Education in India is not related to jobs. Those who want to seek admission in various courses have to take entrance tests: Thus students have to appear in numerous tests all through their student life. Still, the standard of education is not very high in India. It is because much stress is not given to research and vocational training.

In spite of this, there are certainly bright spots in the Indian education system. India has one of the largest forces of science scholars and experts. India is one of the leaders in information technology. She is a pioneer in distance education. According to the DG, UNESCO, “IGNOU is among the best open universities in the world. It has students in 28 countries. India has 14 open universities that no other country has.”

Another ray of hope for India is the knowledge of English which a large number of Indians have. It is true that we should not lay stress on the teaching of English to the extent that it harms the national and regional languages. As common knowledge, basic education should be provided in the mother-tongue. But the importance of English cannot be ignored.

The learned DO, UNESCO points out, “English will be spoken by three billion people by 2010. Currently, 87 percent of the information in cyberspace is in English.” According to him, “Use of English will naturally place India on a steady wicket provided India also uses information technology potential to amplify brainpower.” Moreover, now when allocation to education, both for primary and higher education, has been increased substantially, particularly for `Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’ (Education for All), it is hoped that good days for this neglected sector are coming.
