Dear…………..

I have received your letter. I am glad to know that you, Usha and your Mamma are all right.

In your letter you have sought permission to have a Cable T.V. connection at our home. A cable connection would give you options of more channels and still much more programmes. Before you are exposed to these options, I feel that you should know about the uses and abuses of television. It can be either a bane or a boon, but that entirely depends upon its use. It is a powerful medium of communication which can effectively be used for educating masses. We can watch and hear about daily happenings around the world on it. It would bring different cultures of the world, latest scientific developments and strange lands and people to our drawing room. As seeing is believing, television can convincingly teach people and play a vital role in removing social evils like superstition, illiteracy and dowry.

It can also create awareness among the people about health care and environmental protection. In short, judicious use of television will surely expand the horizon of your knowledge.

But it is a pity that this powerful medium is misused for commercial ends. Instead of promoting culture it is only promoting sales of commodities. I am not averse to pure entertainment, but most of the so-called entertainment programmes on television provide only violence and vulgarity which will abuse young minds.

If you promise to watch only such programmes that would enrich your mind I will permit you to have a cable connection.

Your loving daddy,
