Telling the Time
Materials Required:
- A sunny afternoon
- Several large poster boards
- Dark marker
- A clock
- Adhesive tape
- A friend
Except in the event of the sun being directly over you on a sunny day, your body always casts a shadow, though the lengths of your shadow may vary from time to time.
However, what you seldom realize is that with your shadow, you can actually tell the time. With the help of poster boards, tape them end to end and make a large sheet measuring about 3 by 8 feet.
At around 1 p.m. on a nice and sunny afternoon, stand with your back towards the sun. Place the poster board sheet on the ground and stand with your toes, just touching the edge of the board.
With a dark crayon or marker, outline your shadow on the poster with the help of a friend. Note the time next to the outline.
After an hour, get your friend to draw up your shadow again. Also note the time next to this outline.
Keep doing this every hour till around 5 o’ clock. Find out if your shadow grew larger asthe time passed. Now next time, take the poster out again and place it on the ground. Stand in the same way with your toes touching the ground. Now without a clock, can you tell what time of the day it is?
