Measuring Electrical Energy

Materials Required:

  1. Your home’s electrical meter
  2. Pencil and paper

The unit for measuring electric power is termed as Watt. This is the same measure to differentiate between various bulbs(40W, 60W, 100W), indicating the amount of electric energy needed for the bulb to glow effectively.

Have you ever found out how much electricity your house consumes every day?

Finding out is very simple. The unit that measures electrical usage is watt-hours. One kilo-watt measures up to 1,000 watts.

Consequently, one kilo-watt hour is measured as 1,000 watts of electric power, utilized for an hour. Before leaving for school one morning, check your electricity meter and note down the figure that it reads.

Next day, before leaving for school again, check the meter again and note down the figure. Subtract the first day’s reading from that of the second day’s and the result that you get is the amount of electricity that your house consumes in one day. Make a list of all the appliances that you have in your house and find out how you can save the consumption of electricity.

Not only will you be saving your parents a lot of money, but you will also be serving the national cause of saving electric energy.
