Blinded By Light
Materials Required:
- An automobile
- An adult
- A white poster board
- A black marker
- A dark evening
While there is common knowledge of air pollution, astronomers will also inform you about something known as ‘Light pollution’. This occurs, when light from signs, lamp posts, neon lights, homes and offices, wash out the night sky, thereby hiding fainter stars from our view.
This experiment basically deals with washing out your vision, thereby showing you, how this concept of light pollution works.
Take a white poster board and write down alphabets, something like what you see at your doctor’s. Follow the similar pattern of writing large letters, at the top and smaller ones, as you go down. Your first letters should be seen from a distance of approximately 20 feet.
Now on a relatively dark night, get an adult to stand in front automobile and him/her to hold up your board. Flash a torch on the poster and then, standing at a distance of around 20 feet away from it, try reading out the letters. Keep reading till you can make the letters out.
Once this is done, get an adult to turn on the headlights of the car. Now with your flashlight aimed at the poster like before, try and find out how many alphabets you can read now.
