Extracting Salt from Water

Ocean water is salty. So if you were out on the ocean in a little boat and were thirsty, you would not be able to drink the salty ocean water. The salt in it will make one feel thirstier. In some places around the world, oceans dried up long ago and left the salt behind.

You can show how salt is left, when the salt water evaporates. Have an adult help you measure 1/4 cup of hot tap water and pour it into a wide mouth drinking glass. Measure and pour another 1/4 cup of hot water into the other wide-mouth glass. In one glass, pour 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Stir it. Place both glasses in a sunny window. Each day look at the two glasses and write down what you see.

Is something building up on the bottom of the glass of salt water?

Use the process of evaporation to remove salt from the water collected from a saltwater lake, river or ocean nearby.

Pour some of the salty water on a cookie sheet.

When the water you poured has evaporated, pour more of it onto the sheet. Keep adding more water, as the water on the sheet evaporates. You will soon see salt from the water slowly begin to build up on the sheet.
