What is map projection?
Map projection is the result of transferring the circular or spherical surface of the globe onto a flat piece of paper. This is done by drawing a system of lines, called the meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude, over the area of the earth.
The two most commonly used project ions, although there are many more, are the Mercator and the Mollweide. The Mollweide projection, or dimension, is done in a series of gores and this is the most accurate projection to show the size of countries.
Mercator’s projection is a rectangular grid on which the shapes of large areas are shown greatly distorted. This dimension is most accurate for calculating true direction. This system, invented by the Dutch geographer, Gerhardus Mercator, in the sixteenth century, has enabled navigators ever since, to chart their course with precision and also to help them in finding their position.
