What did Victorian Children play with?
If you keep a sharp lookout, sooner or later you will come across Victorian toys in museums or antique shops. The pictures on these pages will give you some idea of what they are like.
Victorian children used to play with beautiful dolls, gaily painted rocking horses, mechanical, toys that were exact replicas of such things as steam trains, correct in every detail, and perhaps, most fascinating of all, doll’s houses that were crammed full of furniture, pictures, dinner services and everything else that a family might possibly need !
Most Victorian toys were made in Germany. Victorian dolls were made with perfectly modeled porcelain heads and exquisite clothes. Most children hand a ‘Sunday’ doll- this was an extra special doll that was kept in a glass case and only brought out an Sunday! Other toys that were very popular were based which was originally used to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth.
