The Sun and its Family
The Sun, as we see it, is a huge ball of very hot gas measuring about 1,380,000 kilometres in diameter. Dark spots can often be seen on the Sun’s surface, these are known as Sun spots and they come and go frequently. These spots stand out as dark patches since they are cooler as compared to the hot area by which they are surrounded. Huge flames called prominences are constantly shot out from the surface of the sun. The Sun has its own gravitational field which is strong enough to keep the nine planets in its family revolving around it. The Sun’s family comprises of, in order of revolution, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. These planets move around the sun in the same direction in an elliptical (oval shaped) orbit. The planets also rotate on their own axes as they revolve around the Sun. The Earth is the only any with any life on it.
