Reformation
During the 14th and 15th centuries a lot of corrupt practices had crept into the Catholic Church in Europe. In the year 1517 a monk called Martin Luther made a list of the wrong practices and nailed it to the door of a church in Wittenberg. As a result of his action, he was expelled from the Catholic order. In the years that followed, Martin Luther set up his own religious order called ‘The Protestants’. This order spread all over Europe and by 1560 there were two religions in Europe i.e. Catholics and Protestants. The movement of reforming the Catholic religion and the birth of Protestants was called the Reformation. By the year 1545 the Catholic leaders realised that they needed to reform themselves and in the same year these leaders met at the Council of Trent and started a Counter-Reformation of their own religion. Subsequent to this there was the thirty years war between the Protestants and Catholics in Germany from 1618. In the year 1648 the Protestants won and the peace of Westaphalia was signed.
