How did the Omnibus get its name?
We usually call a motor vehicle that carries passengers a bus, but this word is short for the Latin word omnibus. Why should such a strange word find its way into the English language? In fact, it did not first enter English at all, but French, because bus services originated in France. In 1823, a horse-drawn bus service opened in Nantes. The terminus was outside a store owned by Monsieur Omnes which bore the Latin sign Omnes Omnibus – meaning ‘Omnes for everything’. ‘Omnibus’ can mean ‘for everyone’ as well as ‘for every-thing’, and from this sign, the bus owner got the idea of calling his vehicle omnibuses la because the new form of transport was really intended for everyone to use. The name stuck, and when bus services opened in England in 1829, the word omnibus entered the English language too.
