राम स्वामी मिश्र, स्वामी दयानन्द के विरोधी थे। उन्होंने स्वामी जी को शास्त्रार्थ करने की चुनौती दी और शर्त रखी-“जो पराजित होगा, उसकी नाक काट दी जायेगी।” यह कहकर उन्होंने वह छुरी दिखाई, जो नाक काटने के लिए अपने साथ लाए थे। स्वामी दयानन्द ने कहा, “आपकी इस शर्त में एक संशोधन करना चाहूंगा, जो पराजित होगा, उसकी जिव्हा काट ली जायेगी, क्योंकि वाद-विवाद करने वाली जिव्हा होती है, नाक नहीं।” राम स्वामी मिश्र घबराकर छुरी वहीं फेंककर तैश में पैर पटकते हुए चले गए।
