कलकत्ता में एक कवि सम्मेलन का आयोजन हुआ। मंच पर उपस्थित कवियों में श्री नीरज तथा श्री हरिवंश राय बच्चन भी थे ! नीरज जी ने तो अपने काव्य पाठ से पूर्व भूमिका में कहा-“अब मैं बूढ़ा हो चला हूँ। मृत्यु की छाया का क्षीण आभास होता रहता है। इसी मनोदशा की एक कविता सुनिए, “एक पांव चल रहा अलग-अलग और दूसरा किसी के साथ है।”
संयोगवश उनके बाद बच्चन जी की बारी थी। नीरज जी की भूमिका के जवाब में बच्चन जी ने कहा- “यदि नीरज जी बूढ़े हो चले हैं, तो मैं कब्र में से बोल रहा हूँ। फिर उन्होंने सुनाया-” -“मैं गाता हूँ, इसीलिए जवानी मेरी है !”
