Tourism and Its Scope

Tourism is a business activity connected with providing accommodation, services, and entertainment for people who are visiting a place for pleasure. Tourism that involves the movement of people within their own country is known as ‘domestic tourism’. Tourism can also be across the national border. However, such tourism is known as ‘international tourism’. From a business point of view, tourism may be viewed as a business that fulfills the needs of the travelers. Therefore, from economic angle tourism can be regarded as an industry that contributes to the country’s social and economic progress. Tourism can be helpful to both developed as well as developing country.

The scope of tourism is expanding day-by-day. The desire to visit different places is no longer restricted only to rich people. Today, the concept of vacation has gained importance and has become popular among the common masses.

Travel and tourism is one of the world’s largest industries with around 200 million workers around the world employed in it. It is estimated to provide millions of more jobs in the coming years. Thus, travel and tourism can be regarded as the world’s largest economic force with an annual turnover of more than four trillion dollars. The most spectacular gains in the recent years are expected.

In the region of Asia Pacific, this industry has grown almost twice the rate compared to the rest of the world. Based on a research conducted by organization called Pacific Asia Travel Association, there is a steady increase to travel Asia Pacific destinations. Travelling to countries like China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand has increased tremendously. The main reason behind this is that these countries have spent large sum of money in making their destinations worth seeing. This study has shown the narrowing gap between the East and the West.

The European countries are looking towards these destinations as they can have a vacation at cheaper prices. Besides cheaper rates, there are various other factors contributing to the shift in destinations. Introduction and promotion of special airline fares, packages offered by tour operators for different destinations and willingness by the neighbouring destinations to promote tourism jointly have added in the shift in destinations. Moreover, to attract more and more tourists travel incentives are offered by airlines, travel agencies and other companies.
