The Cloning Debate

Cloning is a form of non-sexual, or asexual reproduction in which all the offspring are genetically identical to each other and to the parent that gave rise to them. All the identical organisms-parent and offspring-collectively form a “clone”; and each individual is said to be a “clone” of all the others within the clone. Cloning is said to be used for many positive reasons, but the fact remains that it has an equal, if not greater amount of negative side effects. Cloning is a field of science that is being taken too far and without strict regulations; it can lead to detrimental outcomes.

Many people state that if cloning were available then the medical field be more productive and successful than it is now. The reason is that cloning can produce human beings as well as animals that can be used for testing. Another supposed benefit of cloning would be the. reinstatement of animals that have once thought to be extinct or are currently listed as endangered. These animals through DNA that has been preserved or discovered can be recreated.

Finally, another popular reason that people are pushing to allow cloning is to aid in the production of organs. It has been said that human torsos can be recreated to allow for the use of the organs from the “body.” These torsos could be created to match up with all blood types. In turn, the organs and tissue from the “body” could be used for people who wait years for organs that they so desperately need. This type of cloning could also aid the medical field in the production of extremities that may be needed for people who currently rely on artificial limbs.

If there are not strict regulations then who knows maybe the scientist could crossbreed a human with a horse. It may seem silly but remember what people probably thought when they first read of Huxley’s “Brave New World”, it wasn’t thought that the reproduction of a living being was or would ever be possible but in 1997 Dolly appeared. Is it ethical to clone a human? Is it OK to create a person whose sole purpose is to exist to be cut up for the benefit of others?

Finally, a significant reason that cloning must be controlled significantly is the idea of franchising. To date, Dr. Wilmut is talking to several biotechnology companies, looking to set up an embryo cloning process worldwide. This idea is the reason that cloning should have zero allowance. With franchising comes competition and with competition comes the race to be better with a better clone and who knows what that could lead to. Dolly’s creator, Dr. Wilmut, knoWs that his process works and that it can lead to the creation of identical and even new embryos. Cloning is real and franchising it will only allow for rapid advancement in the field.

Although many scientists are now developing aspects of cloning technology, relatively few want simply to make clones that are replicas of existing creatures. But some do, including some who are already seeking, or offering, cloning of human beings. By 2001, doctors both in the United States and in Europe were actively preparing to offer cloning to couples unable to reproduce by other means, though many critics worldwide felt that these ventures were at least premature. By the same token, some medical scientists are now using the new techniques of genetic engineering to correct serious genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis. Others dream of going further: introducing genes into unborn children that would (with luck) make them more athletic, or beautiful, or intelligent, the so-called “designer baby”. Many apparently see nothing wrong with this, seeing it in the same light as spending considerable sums of money on private schooling and college fees.

Cloning is wrong. It is totally unethical and frankly shows little respect for human life. The fear of what may come is enough to stop the whole advancement of cloning. The advancements that science has made are incredible and it may be beneficial in some ways but are the outcomes of what will come from cloning worth the risk?
