The Autobiography of a Plough

Outline: My birth and early life – my work – conclusion.

You might have seen my pictures in a book. I am very simple in my build. I am a stout short wooden piece, sharpened to a point at one end and fitted to a long pole at the other. My point is strengthened by the pointed iron ploughshare. There is another piece above the stout piece to be used as a handle. At the other end of the pole there is the yoke. On either side of the yoke, a bullock is saddled and they drag me. I owe my birth to a carpenter.

I am a seasonal worker. I do not work for all the twelve months of the year. I start my work by the beginning of June. Early in the morning, I go with the farmer to the field. I till the land and the seeds are sowed and my work is over. But you must remember that the harvest largely depends on my work. If I do not till the land, well, there would be no good crop.

Now with the advance of science we are being replaced by tractors. These are very powerful and very quick. They can work as much as hundreds of us can do. Of course, still in a backward country like India we are in use. But soon, a time will come when we will be out of use and I will not regret it. The old order should change, yielding place to the new. So, I will be happy to yield to tractors, for, that would be for the betterment of mankind.

Difficult Words: Stout – strong. regret – feel sorry for wrong – doing. yield – give in.
