Essay on “A City” Complete Essay, Paragraph, Speech for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

A City

Mumbai, located on the west coast of India, is perhaps the best developed and hence the most important city in India. Being a very wealthy city, it plays a vital role in the economy of the country. Owing to its wealth, people from other parts of the country are attracted to Mumbai in such volume and variety as make the twelve million strong population of the city represent a microcosm or a miniature of Indian culture. Though its expansion in terms of area and infrastructure does not match the rate of increase of its population, Mumbai, quite remarkably continues to be vibrant and lively: with its people, irrespective of their origins, living in healthy harmony with themselves and with the city. It is a certainty that Mumbai’s buoyancy is due to the enthusiasm and hope with which its resourceful people look to the future.

Though Mumbai was the last of the four metro cities to be founded, it has realized a level of growth unmatched by the other three. This achievement was possible because the pioneering work in industrialization, and the creation of infrastructure like railways and telecommunications, which together constitute the backbone of modern development, was done in Mumbai. That process of development has now given Mumbai two airports, two seaports and an extremely efficient railway network system which caters to the needs of the large local population. Moreover, the establishment of the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), the overseas telecommunication centre in Mumbai, has made the city the nerve centre of India’s communication links with the rest of the world.

With a wide variety of industries which produce an amazing range of goods and services, Mumbai leads the country in industrial output also. The textile, film and automobile industries, which have been having a healthy life for almost a century, are now being complemented by modern ventures like computer software development, electronics and hoteliering.

Complementing its contribution to the infrastructure and industrial development of the country, is Mumbai’s role in shaping the political destiny of the people of India. From the founding of the Indian National Congress, which meant the beginning of the end of British rule in India, to the Quit India resolution that culminated in India’s independence, Mumbai, and its people have played important roles in the freedom struggle.

The importance that Mumbai enjoys in Indian society, as well as around the world, has its source in the enterprise, optimism and versatility of its vibrant people. Both the original population of Maharashtrians and Gujaratis, and the migrants from other parts of the country have, by their hard work and hope, helped Mumbai reach where it has. Undoubtedly, Mumbai is the only place in India where a large population has proved itself to be an asset and a resource, rather than a burden.
