The name of Tenzing Norgey has been written in golden letters in the history of mountaineering. He was the first Indian to scale the highest peak of the world, the Mount Everest (height 8,848 metres). He achieved this mountaineering feat together with Sir Edmund Hillary, the well known adventurer, of New Zealand. Tenzing went on this Himalayan expedition as a member of the British mountaineering team under the 16adership of Colonel John’ Hunt and touched the highest peak of the world on 29, March 1953. World gave due recognition to this unique success of Tenzing. Besides India, the governments of Nepal and England conferred honours on Tenzing. The Government of India conferred the title of `Padama Bhushan’ on Tenzing in 1959. As a matter of fact Tenzing was actively associated with all the Mount Everest expeditions from 1936 to 1953.

Tenzing was born in Nepal in a poor family. Tenzing was a . follower of Buddhism and had acquired the Indian citizenship in 1933. Coffee was his favourite drink and keeping dogs was his favourite hobby. Tenzing was interested in mountaineering since his childhood and so he grew into a good and excellent mountaineer. The childhood name of Tenzing was Namgyal Wagundi. He was also called Khumjung Bhutia. Tenzing was also awarded the George Medal in recognition of his excellent service in the field of mountaineering. For imparting training in mountaineering the Government of India established the `Himalayan Mountaineering Institute’ at Darjeeling in West Bengal in 1954 and Tenzing was appointed Director (Training) in this institute. Tenzing Norgay nicknamed ‘Tiger of Snows’, wrote the name of India on the Himalayan heights by his indomitable courage and he will always be remembered for this.
