Mao Tse-tung (now spelt Mao Zedong) was worshipped like a god in his own lifetime by his countrymen. He transformed a weak and semi feudal backward country into a modern and one of the most powerful countries of the world. Mao struggled for several decades to found the Communist China. Mao was known to his countrymen as Chaiman Mao’ because he was the Chairman of the Central Committee of. Chinese Communist Party and he was also the Head of the State. ‘Red Book’ which contains the teachings and famous quotes of Mao is a Bible for the Chinese. Mao was also a Communist theorist and he made some important amendments in the Marxist-Leninist ideology, known as `Maoism’.

Mao was born 26th December, 1893 in a peasant family of Hunan, a southern province of China. Since his very childhood, he loved to read books. His life is a long tale of poverty, physical suffering, dreadful wars and sacrifice—all for the sake of his country. Mao became active in the revolutionary activities during the years that followed the Chinese revolution of 1911 against the decadent imperialist rule of the Manchu dynasty. After the establishment of the Communist rule in Soviet Russia in 1918 under the leadership of Lenin, Mao helped in the founding of the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. In 1927.he organized the Hunan Autumn Revolt. In 1930, he set up a Chinese Soviet Republic in Kiangsi. The government, however, forced him to abandon the Republic and so in 1934, Mao set out with his followers on the historical ‘Long March’. In this ‘Long March’, Mao and his followers travelled a distance of 3,000 miles and suffering great hardships, reached Yehan in the north-west of China. There, he organized peasants into a guerrilla force and started harassing the government forces. In 1937, Japan attacked China and now communists under the leadership of Mao, cooperated with the Kuomintang forces and fought heroically against the Japanese. Japan was defeated in the Second World War in 1945 and so the trouble from Japan was over. However, China was now engulfed into a Civil War between the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-Shek and the Red Army led by Mao. Tse-tung. In 1948, the decisive battle was fought in which the Kuomintang forces were defeated and Chiang Kai-Shek was driven out of China. Mao proclaimed People’s Republic of China in 1949.

With the help of his trusted colleagues like Chow En-lai, Mao now embarked on the reconstruction of China on the Marxist-Leninist ideals. He ruthlessly suppressed all anti-communist elements in China and carried out political, economic and social reforms at a rapid pace:

This great revolutionary passed away on 9th September 1976, at the age of 83. After his death, a de-Maoisation movement has launched in China by his opponents, but the great work done by Mao for China has become a historical fact.
