Europe : The greatest sculptor of 20th century

Born : 1898        Died : 1986

Henry Moore, one of the most talented and acclaimed sculptors of twentieth century, was born in 1898 in a miner’s family. He was the seventh child of his father. Being good at studies, he finished his early education with distinction. After the First World War, he was a student at Leeds Arts School during 1919-’21. After that, he got admission to London School of Arts, where he learnt a lot. In 1925, Moore went to Paris and was greatly influenced by Indian art in a Paris museum. But, there was no trace of this influence in his work. His creations are generally different from the traditional art forms of Europe. He died in 1986 at the age of 88.

Born in a poor family, Moore believed that the stone should look like stone. His sculptures in stone were so artistically crafted that the original quality of stone remained untouched. His art has eternal value, as his subject generally was man, whom he has presented in a very natural style. He also sculpted in wood and bronze. Mother and Child, Swan, Three Poets, Spindle Piece, North Wind and Madonna and Child are some of his immortal creations. His sculptures can be seen in America, Holland’ and France apart from England. An exhibition of his art creations was held at Delhi in November 1987. In 1967, Henry Moore’s one sculpture, that had been awarded ‘Order of Merit,’ sold in America for £7,000,000.

Henry Moore remained a subject of discussion amongst the intellectuals before the Second World War. His sculptures after the war, in which he has depicted human life and social events in a very natural way, put him in the category of the most respected and popular artist of the world. He shall always be remembered as one of the foremost sculptors of the world.
