Clement Richard Atlee

England : British Politician

Born : AD 1883                    Died : AD 1967

Clement Atlee became the Prime Minister o f England after the Second World War. Winston Churchill who had successfully led England and the allies to victory over Hitler was now rejected by the English people at the hustings.  Labour Party was swept to power and Atlee became the Prime Minister. One of his memorable task was that he was instrumental in granting India its freedom.

Atlee was born in a well-to-do family but he always had great concern for the poor and the down-trodden. He is known for keeping harmony and cooperation among his cabinet colleagues. Not that there were no differences of opinion among his cabinet members, but Atlee, by his gentle nature and positive approach, always managed to keep them together and had control over them. Besides being sympathetic to the cause of India, and granting India freedom, he did many a constructive activity for his country too, like nationalization of some industries, and starting National Health Scheme.

Atlee’s labour party lost elections in 1951. He remained the op-position leader till 1955. He received ‘peerage’ and became a member of the House of Lords as Lord Clement Atlee.

India will always remember him for his kind and sympathetic attitude towards her and for granting her freedom. His pipe-smoking posture is as famous as Churchill’s cigar-smoking image.
