No single individual influenced the course of history in the twentieth century so profoundly as Hitler, though it was an adverse influence. Germany emerged from the World War I as a weak, defeated and humiliated country. However, within years of Hitler’s coming to power Germany became the strongest power of Europe. By his blind policies of conquest, Hitler pushed the countries of the world into World War II in which five million people lost their lives.

Adolf Hitler was born on 20th April 1889 in Austria. He left his school education at the age of sixteen. From 1908 to 1913, Hitler earned his living by painting picture postcards in a Vienna slum. When the World War I broke out Hitler joined the army and fought bravely during the war. In 1919, Hitler joined the German Workers’ Party which he changed into National Socialist German Workers’ Party, in short, Nazi Party. Hitler, through a conspiracy, got himself appointed Chancellor of Germany on 30th January 1933, by the President, Hindenberg. He soon became a dictator.

In 1936, Hitler, recaptured Rhineland from France. In March 1938, German forces occupied Vienna in a dramatic manner and Austria was forcibly united with Germany. Similarly, in March 1939, German forces captured Czechoslovakia. On 1st September 1939, German forces attacked Poland and so World War II was started. In the beginning Hitler got success but when he attacked Soviet Russia in 1941, he met a very strong resistance. Russian forces drove back German armies to Berlin. When rider thought that Germany had collapsed, he committed suicide on 30th April 1945. Hitler was responsible for unprecedented bloodshed in the history of warfare, but he was a man ‘of simple habits. He was a vegetarian, did not smoke, loved children and was fond of animals.
