Poverty Eradication Day – 17th Oct.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated on the 17th of October as a reminder of the global responsibility that exists to work for a more equitable world economy. All the countries of the world have a fair chance to compete and work for those who have less money. The United Nations convened the World Summit on Social Development on 17th October in 1995 in Copenhagen, Denmark. There, representatives of 186 countries and 117 world leaders agreed to make poverty reduction efforts a governmental priority. The goals and objectives of the social Summit were recently reaffirmed at a special session of the General Assembly, where countries adopted further-reaching proposals to assist poverty-fighting efforts aiming to create an equitable society, Poverty is a curse on humanity. It is an inhuman living condition of the people, where there is no meaning of worth life, leading to scourge. Daily, a lot of the world’s poor have to face the humiliation, powerlessness and brutal hardships. Hence Poverty on such a scale is unacceptable. Efforts to reduce poverty have improved living conditions for millions of people around the world. But the results are uneven. Poverty has been eradicated in some parts of the world but in some parts it has deteriorated. In South Asia one project is going on from 1997, called “South Asia Poverty Alleviation Programme (SAPAP). Globalization has opened up vast avenues of wealth creation. It could prove to be a strong force to fight against poverty. Globalization can create bigger markets and growth in economy. But growth alone cannot reduce poverty and income inequality. Economic policy must be combined with effective social policies aimed at education for all, health for all and gender equality. It is essential that globalization is to work for the development of all the world’s peoples. The first United Nations decade for the eradication of poverty plan runs through 2006. We are to meet the goal of eradicating poverty by the year 2015. In many developed countries, it means the will to fight corruption, to put an end to persistent conflict and to build a platform of a good governance leading to good living. In Declaration of Poverty Eradication Plan, World leaders recognised the need to spare no effort to free our fellow countrymen from the dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty.

“Poverty is a curse, Remove it by surge.”
