Mahavira Jayanti falls on the thirteenth day of the Chaitra month. The festival is celebrated in the memory of Lord Mahavira.
According to Jainism, Lord Mahavira is the founder of the Jain religion. This religion upholds twenty-four religious Tirthankaras or Lords. The last Tirthankara Swami Mahavira was also known as Jina.
Mahavira got his holy birth in 599 B.C. to Siddhartha of Kundanpur and the Lichhavi princess Trisala. He always stood for the truth and spoke frankly. He was more serious about the status of society. He experienced atonement in search of knowledge. He preached ahimsa – `non-killing’and believed that every living being, even an insect had a consciousness.
Lord Mahavira spoke against possessing excess wealth, as it brings discomfort and incompetence. He advocated upholding truth because it is significant for life. He taught three ratnas—right conduct, right knowledge and right faith. Swami Mahavira took an oath to facilitate his knowledge for the well-being of the masses.
