The Postal System
Today we put a letter into as letter box and take it for granted that our letter would reach the person we have addressed it to, it would be worthwhile to understand how the postal system started. The postal system dates back to the times of the Romans and the Persians, but in those days the government took responsibility only of its own official messages. Later in the middle ages associations of merchants began to maintain private messenger services for their members. In the sixteenth century the governments found it necessary to maintain a postal service because it was a major revenue earner for them. The first official postal service was started by Henry VIII in England and the mail was carried by official government messengers. Later in 1680 an English merchant started his own postal service which was successful. Subsequently the government took it over. The entire system was really formalised only in 1840 when proper stamps were issued and the rates fixed all over the country based on the weight of the letters. Soon other countries also followed the system in Great Britain and the Postal system came into being.
