Paragraph on “Birds can fly – why can’t we?” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

Birds can fly – why can’t we?

Some of man’s oldest legends are about his dream of flying. A Greek myth tells of Daedalus and his son Icarus. They escaped from the island of Crete using wings of wax and feathers. Icarus was supposed to have flown too near the sun. It melted his wings and he fell into the sea and drowned.

Many people, seeing birds fly, thought feathers were the secret of flight. With coats of feathers or bird-like wings, inventor after inventor tried to fly — and failed.

The way birds fly is shown below. As they beat their wings downwards the feathers fit tightly together, so the wings push down and back on the air, lifting the bird and moving it forward. As the wings are raised for the next stroke they form slots to let the air through.

Birds are very successful fliers. The falcon can race through the air at over 16o km ( 100 miles) per hour; the golden plover can fly for 3,000 km (1,9oo miles) without landing. Birds are built for flight, with steamlined bodies and powerful feathered wings. Man is not.
