United Nations Organization – Achievements and Drawbacks

United Nations Organization was established after Second World War in 1945. The main reason behind its formation was to prevent the outbreak of any war in future. The leaders of the world decided to establish an international organization that could prevent the wars in the world.

UNO was specially organized with certain aims in mind. Besides preventing wars, it aimed to establish friendly relations, international co-operation in political, cultural and social fields. The important functions of the organization were carried by different organs such as Assembly, Security Council, Eco-Social Council and Trusteeship Council.

Security Council is the most important organ because it prevents the outbreak of war. The permanent members of UNO are USA, Russia, China, England and France. Non-permanent members are elected for the period of two years. The Security Council has powers to declare ‘cease fire’ and cut off the diplomatic relations between the countries. However, UNO do not have any army of its own but it can raise an army called ‘United Nation Defense Force’.

UNO has many political and non-political achievements to its credit. In political field, many occasions could have resulted into Third World War. It was very fortunate that UNO was able to prevent that. There was crisis between Arabs and Jews. Moreover, Indonesia, which was the colony of Dutch during Second World War, was occupied by Japan. After the defeat of Japan in Second World War, the Dutch tried to reoccupy Indonesia. Later the Dutch had to give independence to Indonesia due to the force applied by UNO.

Indo-China was the colony of France. During the Second World War, Japan had occupied China. After the defeat of Japan, France tried to reoccupy China. Again, due to the efforts of UNO, Indo-China was given independence by France. In non-political field, achievements of UNO have been working in specialized agencies like UNICEF, WHO and UNESCO.
