Farewell Party

We meet to depart and there lies the sweetness of meeting. Meeting and departure go cheek by jowl. This is the law of nature. Almost all schools observe the tradition of throwing a farewell party by the junior students to the senior-most and outgoing students.

The function was to be arranged by the XI class students under the express supervision of their class teachers. It was the 14th of February, my last day at school. It was the day of parting from my friends, school mates and teachers. Each one of the senior students was given an invitation to grace the occasion.

We reached the school at 3 p.m. A grand send off had been arranged in the beautifully and tastefully decorated school hall. On the stage were our worthy principal, vice principal and other members of the staff. The outgoing students were in their gala dresses.

The function was presided over by the principal. The cultural programme included songs, dances, ghazals, skits, etc. Some students rendered touching farewell songs which made our hearts heavy. Tears lurked in our eyes and with great difficulty we checked them rolling down our cheeks.

After the cultural programme I on behalf of the outgoing students thanked the principal, teachers and juniors. I felt choked with emotions while speaking. Then the teachers gave brief speeches and gave us sermons for our future fife. The principal advised us to be fair in our exams. His was an impassioned speech.

There was an atmosphere of gaiety. Yet it was tinged with an air of melancholy and sadness. Refreshments were served to one and all. We were given pens as gifts.

Then we had a photographs spree. We parted after taking the blessings of our teachers and good wishes of our friends. We all took leave of our teachers and friends individually.

We moved out sadly taking a last lingering look at the school.
