France : The exponent of freedom and liberty

Victor Hugo was the literary giant of the nineteenth century. Even now, intellectuals study his writings and find it topical. He was an immortal writer as also a good painter. He was the writer who was a firm believer in freedom of thought and through his poems and novels he gave a new turn to literature and politics.

Hugo was a great critic of Napoleon. When Napoleon assumed the crown of France, he left France and settled abroad. He lived in exile for 19 years and returned to his native country only when monarchy had been thrown out and France again became a republic. This indicates his radicalism which he propagated through his books. He wrote many books during this period which shall have a place of pride in world literature. Some of his prominent creations are: Les Miserables, The Man who Laughs and Toilers of the Sea. He also wrote many dramas and one of them The King Amuses Himself became very popular. He left behind a large volume of unpublished work that was published only after 100 years.

Victor Hugo was born in France on 26 February 1802. He started going to school at the age of two and began writing at the early age of 13. He amazed everyone with his extraordinary talent when he wrote a drama at the age of 14. His personal life saw many ups and downs, particularly in the sphere of love affairs. He had many love affairs during his life.
