Science and Civilization

Science is the extension of thoughts and mind as civilization is the extension of living.

Ever since the evolution of mankind, humans have strived to overcome the quality of fear in themselves. This jest to survive made him cautious and observant. Thus he took the first step towards unraveling the mysteries of nature around him

As the human race developed so did its scientific understanding. Instincts of self-preservation and the constant wish to outdo the works of nature took him to find shelter in caves and later on develop houses and villages. He warded off the extreme cold by wrapping the dead animal skins, tree barks, and large leaves around himself. In this way, he found a way to protect himself from the natural elements and wild animals.

He discovered fire by observing that a certain stone when struck with another produces sparks and fire. He learned to harness the potential of fire. Tired of roaming from one place to another in search of food man once noticed that accidentally thrown grains sprouted into plants which later gave similar grains. Curious to see whether this could happen again, he planted some more grains. In this manner, the history of agriculture began. Small stone implements gave way to more specialized instruments and with the development of metallurgy, the metal tool came into being

With its primary needs of food, shelter, and clothing taken care of mankind turned its attention towards the stars, the sun, and the moon. Using the only tool of observation available to him, he soon became aware of the cycles of the moon and various stars. Thus he developed the science of astronomy. His growing awareness about his surrounding phenomena like the waterfalls, the rivers, flowers, leaves, trees, etc., and the beauty in them made him develop the fine arts.

Aesthetical awareness and scientific development together made small villages grow into large civilizations. Here beside the material needs of a person the aesthetic needs of a person were also fulfilled. As one civilization outgrew its usefulness another one took its place. The fall of every civilization followed a definite pattern of social, moral, and cultural decay. Each of the new civilizations brought with them new values, priorities, cultural identity, and technology. Some civilizations stressed the fine arts like paintings, dance, music, others stressed the scientific and industrial development

We can therefore easily conclude that civilizations grow on the balanced development of science, technology, and the fine aesthetic qualities of mankind.
