Labour Day – 1st May

May Day is also known as The International Labour Day. It is celebrated on the 1st of May every year, as an occasion to salute respectfully to those who have consistently struggled for the rights of workers. The role played by labour in Agriculture, commercial and industrial development of the country is of profound significance and laudable.

On the 1st of May 1886, the Federation of Organised Trades and Labour Unions passed a resolution, stating that legally eight hours of work would constitute a day’s work.

1st May is International Worker’s Day, and commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world and is recognised in almost every country. 250,000 workers were involved in the May Day movement by April 1886. The heart of the movement was Chicago, organised primarly people’s association. But by May 1st, the movement had already won gains for many Chicago clothing cutters, shoemakers and packing house workers raised consciously. Workers belonging to several unions hold marches and organise meetings to ponder over the problems of the working labour class that they face in the country. They resolve to fight the issues plaguing the working class. We should be confident that our workers will continue to provide their contribution for the development and progress of our great nation.
