Letter to Editor regarding the harassment caused to helpless passengers.

Sir,

I would like to draw your attention towards the high-handed behaviour of the Railway Police Force on the passengers travelling in an unreserved compartment, which is a big disgrace to the Indian Railways, the biggest Public Sector of the country. On June 20, 2003, I was travelling to Agra in mangal Express from Nizamuddin and since I did not have a reservation, I took a general ticket and sat in the unreserved compartment. The moment the train left Nizamuddin, about four-five constables of RPF entered the compartment and started to check the luggage on the pretext of searching for a bomb. This caused great inconvenience to the poor passengers who had to open their luggage and repack. The ordeal did not end here. The poor passengers were asked to cough-up money on the pretest that they were carrying more weight than the required luggage weight. And despite the pleas by the passengers, the police continued to harass them. All this continued till Mathura, where these armed people de-boarded the train. I would like to request the Railway Ministry to conduct raids on the train to nab such culprits, who cause havoc with the public and dismiss them from their jobs, otherwise the RPF personnel will continue to behave as if railway is their fiefdom.

Yours Truly,

Pranay Krishna
