The Cats and the Monkey

Once there were two cats. They stole a piece of bread from a house. They thought to eat the bread now after dividing it equally between them. But they failed to divide it equally.

Finally, they reached a monkey. He sat with a scale in his hands. The monkey saw the two cats worried. He asked them to tell him their anxiety. When he heard of their anxiety; he proposed that he could solve it easily as he had a scale with him. The cats agreed.

They gave the piece of bread to the monkey. He tore it into two pieces and put it on the scale. Bit by bit, he tore the bigger piece to equalize them. All the small bits that he had torn from the two pieces, he ate them away. Now the pieces became very small. The cats thought to be satisfied by what remained of the two pieces.

They requested the monkey to stop equalizing the bread and return it to them. But the monkey said if he would not charge for the labor that he had done. Saying this, the monkey picked up both the pieces and ate them away. The poor cats were helpless and returned empty-handed.

Moral: Don’t quarrel over trifling.
