Life in the Deciduous Forests
Deciduous forests which once covered vast expanses of land in the northern temperate region have diminished in number and we have very few left today. These forests have a lot of shrubs on the ground around huge trees of Oak, Beech, Ash, Birch, and Alder, and as such they are able to support a lot of wild life like deer, wild boar, wolves, lynx, mountain lions, foxes and smaller animals like raccoons, weasels, skunks, dormouse, wood mouse, hedgehogs, rabbits etc. Many varieties of birds also make these forests their home, predatory birds like kites, buzzards, sparrow hawks, and tawny owls live here in large numbers. We also have omnivorous birds like the Blue Jay which live off eggs, the blackbird which feeds on worms living with other birds like woodpeckers, nightingales, night jars, flycatchers and warblers in these forests.
