How to Write “Letters of Sympathy and Good Cheer” with example

Letters of Sympathy and Good Cheer

People who are ill especially appreciate a letter of sympathy and good cheer. Although such a letter, like a letter of condolence, must be tactful and sincere, it needn’t be as formal or dignified. Let the circumstances be your guide as to the tone of your letter. A friend recovering from an appendectomy would  probably enjoy a light , witty not. But a person who is seriously ill would have every right to feel resentful of a letter written in a comical mood.

Not that a letter of sympathy should be gloomy. It should radiate warmth and friendliness and a sincere understanding of the person’s bad times.

In writing to a person who is ill, convey the idea that everything will be all right, that he is well on the road to recovery. Minimize the illness, avoid dwelling on  morbid details, and don’t tell how a friend died of the same illness. Your letter may be as brief or as chatty as you wish.

Example:-

Dear Mr. Tandon,

I was so sorry to hear you were in the hospital. Do hurry and get well Everyone at  the office misses you and hopes you will be back at your desk very soon.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Mrs. Rita,

Mrs. Anita and I are mighty sorry to hear of your  illness. Your many friends are thinking of you and won’t be happy  until we hear you’re completely recovered.

I understand you will be hospitalized for a few weeks, so I’ m sending you the new best- seller to help you while away the time. I hope you will enjoy it.

Cordially yours.
