1. India won its freedom on 15 August 1947 and became a Republic on 26 January 1950.
2. The new Constitution of free India took effect from this day.
3. Since that year 26 January is being celebrated as Republic Day with a lot of pomp and show, for it is indeed a great day in the history of India.
4. 26 January is a public holiday in India. In the morning, there is a flag-hoisting ceremony; people from far and near gather to witness this scene.
5. They salute the flag after which there is a speech by the chief guest.
6. We are reminded of all the people who lost their lives and made so many sacrifices to give us the freedom we enjoy today.

8. Then the National Anthem is sung, while everybody stands to attention as a mark of respect.
