Science Project “Preserving Food” Complete School Projects on Air, Water, Weather and Temperature for Class 8, 9, 10 and 12 Students.

Preserving Food

Materials Required:

  1. Small, plastic freezer or storage bags
  2. Carrot
  3. Lettuce
  4. Celery
  5. Use of a freezer
  6. Pencil and paper

Food is preserved to make it stay fresh for longer periods. Milk stays fresh much longer, if it is stored in a refrigerator rather than being kept on the kitchen table.

Some of the food items can be preserved by freezing. Look in your refrigerator’s freezer and have a look at what all is being stored in it.

You may find ice-cream, meat, vegetables such as carrots, corn, frozen peas and lima beans.

Let’s do a test to see, if there are other kinds of food that we can preserve by freezing.

Put fresh pieces of carrot, lettuce and celery in separate small, plastic food bags respectively. Place all three bags in a freezer. Leave them for a day or two.

Remove them from the freezer and let them thaw out for a few hours. Then look at them carefully, touch and taste them as well. Write down any changes you see and any difference in taste, caused by freezing.

Is the lettuce still as crisp, as it was, when frozen? Do you think freezing is a good way to keep these vegetables fresh for long?

Try to preserve other foods by freezing such as an egg. Put it into a plastic bag to keep the freezer clean„ in case it breaks.

Try to freeze pieces of fruits.
