Converging Light
Materials Required:
- A cardboard box of 60 cm to 90 cm high
- Two flashlights
- A clear evening, at dusk
Galileo’s discovery of the telescope in 1609 was a huge development in the science of Astronomy. This allowed people to see hitherto unseen things in the sky at night. What we see at night with the naked eye, are not merely shining points of light, burning with different intensities, but actually planets, like Saturn and the like. Strange cloud-like shapes, called Nebulae can also be determined by large telescopes. It should also be known, that what looks like a point of light, might actually be just two or even thousands of stars.
You can prove through this experiment, that it is possible to get a single light ray from two sources of light. On a clear evening, at dusk, go out to a sidewalk and place a cardboard box there. Place two flashlights on top of the box and turn them on. They should both be directed in the same straight way. Keep walking away from the lights and you shall soon see that both the lights fuse into one single ray.
