Govt. Prohibits Smoking in Public Places

Dec. 26:

In an attempt to curb smoking and the pollution it creates, the Supreme Court has issued an order that people will have to refrain from smoking in govt. offices, restaurants, theatres and such places where there is a congregation of the public, including the bus and trains. To make the action effective, the govt. has decided to ban the selling of cigarettes and any type of gutkha at the railway’s platforms and the bus stands. This verdict is definitely going to be a big blow the cigarette and bidi manufacturers. Even the gutkha market will be badly hit. There is no doubt that the govt. makes huge money in the form of excise duty, but in the recent times, pressure had been mounting on the govt. to ban the sale and consumption of tobacco products, initiated by some of the NGOs. The govt. definitely stands to lose in terms of revenue generation, but this step is better for the non-smoking fraternity, who was becoming “passive smokers” due to the smoking fraternity. The govt. has further decided to ban the sale of tobacco-based products within the premises of schools and colleges. If ay vendor is found to be flouting the norms, he will face imprisonment. This brings a lot of relief to the parents bothered about the smoking habits of their children.
