During the Gupta period the people enjoyed perfect religious freedom. The emperors used to treat monks belonging to various religious denominations with kindness and they used to give them much money by way of charity though they themselves belonged to the Brahmanical creed. Thus, learned Buddhist monks used to reside in the monasteries at Patliputra and many Buddhists used to come from far and near to study the lofty ideals of Buddhism. Fa Hien had observed a number of monasteries where thousands of monks lived and studied. These monasteries were rich and had enough land property annexed to them. Caste rules also were observed, according to the writings of Fa Hien. There was perfect peace and order in the country and the Government was carried on with great efficiency. There were no thieves or high-way robbers. On the whole, it was a time of great prosperity and tolerance and the Government being very strong, followed humane principles and there was no persecution at all.
