How does a chameleon catch its food?
The chameleon (above) is a strange – looking reptile which is able to change its colour to suit its surroundings. It cannot change colour completely, of course, but it can blend in with its background remarkably well. This enables it to approach its food quite closely without being seen. Another interesting feature of chameleons is the way in which their eyes can move independently of each other. In this way, one eye can be searching the lower branches of a tree for food, and the other eye can look higher in the tree. When the chameleon spots an insect that might make a nice is in range of its long, sticky tongue. Then the tongue shoots out, and the insect is carried back to the chameleon’s mouth.
