Creation of the Mountains
Elevations on the Earth’s surface have been constantly changing due to the movement of it’s crust. On occasions the crust tends to sink downwards in some places, causing faults, the corresponding area which doesn’t sink is then at a higher elevation. Elsewhere while moving, the Earth’s crust tends to exert pressure sideways thus causing it to crease or form folds. The former result in the formation of a ‘Block mountain’ of which the ‘Sierra Nevada’ range in America is an example and the latter form the ‘Fold mountains’ like the Himalayas and Alps. The third type of mountains arc the ‘Volcanic mountains’ which are formed from volcanic eruptions and the cooling of erupted lava, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Fujiyama and Mt.Vesuvius are some of the famous volcanic mountains. The shape of the mountains as we see today is a result of thousands of years of erosion by wind, ice and water.
