Asia

Asia is the largest continent on Earth, it occupies one third of the land surface. It has Africa and the Indian ocean to the south, the Arctic ocean to the north, the Pacific ocean in the east and Europe in the West. Asia is inhabited by two thirds of the world population. There are about forty nations in Asia and a large number of languages are spoken by the people. Physical features and complexions of the people also vary from place to place.

Northern Asia is largely a frozen region with very little population or vegetation. The area which lies within the Arctic Circle is constantly frozen and is called ‘Permafrost’. Even though the area is frozen, it is still sparsely inhabited because of the rich mineral and oil wealth it holds. Towards the west, Asia is separated from Europe by the Ural mountain ranges. China and Mongolia largely make up central Asia. The world’s third largest river called the Yangtze Kiang flows for more than 6300 km through China.

Towards the south-east is the South-east Asian sub-continent. This subcontinent comprises of Pakistan, India, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Malaysia etc. It has the Himalayan mountains in the north and the Indian ocean in the south. This part of Asia has a variety of climatic conditions and towards the east it has a warm damp climate and is largely covered by tropical rain forests. The forests of Thailand, Malaysia and Burma (Myanmar) are hardwood forests and provide home to various species of animals and birds. Large scale deforestation in this region is a major cause of concern to environmentalists and ecologists.

Further down south lies Indonesia which is made up of a group of more than 13,000 islands. Most of the smaller islands in this area are made up of volcanoes. On the southern and south-western side of Asia lies the oil rich Middle East which comprises of Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates etc. This area is largely desert and lies between Afghanistan on one side and the Red sea on the other. The people of this area mostly speak Arabic.

On the Eastern coast of Asia lie the countries of Korea and Japan. The Korean Peninsula lies between China and Japan. Korea is divided into two parts i.e. North Korea and South Korea. North Korea is dominated by the Communists while South Korea has a flourishing economy supported by the Western nations. Japan is located further East of Korea. It comprises of group of four islands called Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Today Japan is considered to be one of the most prosperous nations of the world.
