Karva Chauth

Widowhood is all frightening. Karva Chauth marks a day of fasting by the wife for the husband’s long life and health. This festival nine days ahead of Diwali. This is a very popular festival among the newlyweds. Markets are flooded with the items required for this festival. Women get their hands decorated with intricate henna designs Jeweler shops, cloth shops and bangle shops experience maximum rush of women customers.

On this auspicious day the married women get up before dawn. The blessings of the Almighty are invoked for longevity of their husbands. Mothers-in-law treat their daughters-in-law to sumptuous food called ‘sargi’ to be eaten before the sunrise. Till the rise of the moon wives do not take any eatables and water.

Wives in their gala dresses and-paraphernalia look new brides. They are in a festive mood. They get gifts from their mothers-in-law. They also receive goodies from their mothers meant for their mothers-in-law. Before the sunset a corner in the house for the worship of Goddess Parvati is decorated. A Karva, a small mud pitcher with a spout or any small vessel is also used. It is filled with water. An elderly woman narrates the legend of Karva Chauth. Then the ‘Vrata Katha’ of Veeravati is related. Story of Satyavan and Savitri is also related.

The wait for the moon to rise begins. As soon as the reflector of the sun, the moon is sighted, prayers are offered to it. The fasting women observe the moon through a sieve and then break their fast. It is a tradition that the first sip of water and the first morsel of food are offered by the husband.

Thereafter a sumptuous dinner follows. This activity marks the end of the festival. This festival cements the relations of husband and wife and solidifies their sacred bond.
